Liner Materials for Steel Stacks
Often a steel stack design is driven by the requirements of the liner. Proper liner selection can be made only after the operating conditions have been investigated. The operating conditions consist of the flue gas composition, flow rate, and temperature. Selection of the proper liner material or combination of materials will ensure the proper service life of the liner.
Materials that can be used for liner design are the following:
- Carbon Steel
- Stainless Steel
- Gunite Coating
- Refractory Lining
- Vinylester Llining
- Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP)
- Glass reinforced plastic (GRP)
- Acid Resistant Brick
- Glass Block
- C-276 and or Alloys

Carbon Steel
Carbon steel liners:
- Have a higher temperature range than FRP
- Are typically lower cost than stainless steel
- Are used with dryer exhaust gases

Stainless Steel
Stainless steel liners:
- Have a higher temperature range than carbon steel
- Are used in moderately corrosive environments

FRP
You would use an FRP liners when you have:
- a highly corrosive environments
- a heavily saturated flue gases
- a lower temperature range

Glass Block
Glass block liners:
- Are used in severely corrosive environments
- Withstand high operating temperature
- Requires onsite installation after outer shell is erected
