Liner Materials for Concrete Chimneys
Often chimney design is driven by the requirements of the liner. Proper liner selection can be made only after the operating conditions have been investigated. The operating conditions consist of the flue gas composition, flow rate, and temperature. Selection of the proper liner material or combination of materials will ensure the proper service life of the liner.
Materials that can be used for liner design are the following:
- Carbon steel
- Stainless Steel
- Gunite coating
- Refractory lining
- Vinylester lining
- Fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP)
- Glass reinforced plastic (GRP)
- Acid resistant brick
- Glass block
- C-276 and or alloys

Carbon Steel
Carbon steel liners are:
- used in a higher temperature range than FRP
- typically lower cost than stainless steel
- used with dryer exhaust gases

Gunite Refractory
Gunite refractory liners are used in:
- mild chemical environments
- mild to severe temperatures

Brick Liners
Brick liners are used in:
- moderate corrosive environments
- mild to severe temperatures

Stainless Steel
Stainless steel liners are used in:
- a higher temperature range than carbon steel
- moderately corrosive environments

FRP
FRP liners are used in:
- highly corrosive environments
- heavily saturated flue gases
- a lower temperature range

Cast-in-Place Refractory
Cast-in-place refractory liners are used in:
- mild chemical environments
- mild to severe temperatures
