Inspections of industrial stacks and chimneys are critical for structural integrity, safety, and compliance with industry standards such as ASME STS-1 (Standard for Steel Stacks). This code provides guidelines for design, construction, and maintenance, including inspection requirements.

ASME STS-1 outlines three inspection classes, each with varying scope and rigor:

Class I Inspection – The most comprehensive, involving detailed visual, nondestructive testing (NDT), and structural analysis, typically required after extreme events (e.g., earthquakes, fires) or for high-risk structures.

Class II Inspection – A moderate-level assessment, including visual examination and limited NDT, often performed periodically (e.g., every 3-5 years) to monitor wear and corrosion.

Class III Inspection – A basic visual inspection for general condition checks, usually conducted annually or biannually to identify obvious defects or immediate hazards.
